Written By Marvs on Friday, July 27, 2012 | Be the first to comment!

Paris is the capital and largest city of France. It is a very popular tourist destination with about 42 million tourists annually and is the most visited city in the world. Who wouldn’t love to visit Paris with its lovely cityscape and famous landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame de Paris?

Eiffel Tower - Paris, France

Cycling is very popular in Paris and is being promoted to replace car use in Paris for short trips. So if you’re planning to visit The City of Light, it is best that you know how to ride a bike to enjoy its wonderful scenery. Either that or  be prepared to walk as the city implements a car-free scheme where certain roads are closed to vehicular traffic on Sundays and public holidays between the hours of 9AM and 5PM.

If you’re wondering if you need to buy a bike to enjoy touring Paris, you don’t need to as the city offers a bike sharing system called Vรฉlib' with more than 20,000 public bicycles distributed at more than a thousand parking stations that can be rented for short and medium distances including one way trips.

One way to tour Paris, France is on a Yellow Pedicab, which is gaining popularities these days among tourists and locals alike. Yes, the name sounds like a famous pizza chain but its not.

Boy found positive of Enterovirus 71 (EV71)

Written By Marvs on Friday, July 20, 2012 | Be the first to comment!

Health Secretary Enrique Ona confirmed that a one-year old boy from Davao City has been found positive for the Enterovirus 71 (EV71). He said that the tests conducted at the Research Institute of Tropical Medicine (RITM) of the eight suspected Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) revealed one was tested positive of the virus similar to the ones in Cambodia that killed 64 children.

Enterovirus 71 (EV71)

Ona clarified however that "the virus is similar to Cambodia but this case is the mild one." He added that the boy had developed fever and rashes on his hands, soles of feet, mouth and buttocks last July 6 and was brought for consultation at a local health facility but was subsequently sent home and has since recovered very well.

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is a virus of the genus Enterovirus in the Picornaviridae family notable for its etiological role in epidemics of severe neurological diseases in children. It was first isolated and characterized from cases of neurological disease in California in 1969. Infection may be asymptomatic or it may cause diarrhea, rashes, and hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD); and also has the potential to cause severe neurological disease.

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection

Although the victim's family members have no sickness, they are still being closely monitored for possible manifestation of symptoms such as high fever, chest and muscle pain, sore throat and headache, Ona said.

The Bourne Legacy film – what to expect?

Written By Marvs on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 | Be the first to comment!

The Bourne Legacy is the fourth installment of the movie based on Jason Bourne – a character created by Robert Ludlum in his novels. The story is now centered on a new CIA operative, Aaron Cross, that stars Jeremy Renner. It resumes after the conclusion of The Bourne Ultimatum, as a new cast of characters grapple with the consequences of Jason's actions.

The Bourne Series

The film will not be a reboot or prequel in any way, but more likely a "sidequel" or full spin-off with a new character in the mold of Bourne dealing with the ramifications of the Treadstone conspiracy.

The Bourne Legacy will be a movie without Jason Bourne in it. Quite interesting!

I'm a fan of the Bourne films that’s why I bought the original DVD releases of the said film that starred Matt Damon even if torrent downloads are available for I am a supporter of good quality movies.

I’m quite anxious what will be the outcome of this fourth Bourne movie which I hope will be a success as 25% of it is being shot on location in Manila, Philippines right now.

Wikipedia & Reddit Joins Anti-SOPA Protest

Written By Marvs on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 | 3 comments so far

[Updated Jan. 18, 2012]

Wikipedia and Reddit will participate in the blackout protest in their response to the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) bill, a piece of proposed legislation that is working its way through the US Congress.

Wikipedia Blackout

Introduced in the US House of Representatives in late October, SOPA aims to crack down on copyright infringement by restricting access to sites that fuel it. This piece of legislation has turned into an all-out war between media companies and tech power players.

For those who are not yet familiar about SOPA, you can check it out here:

Stop Online Piracy Act

Wikipedia SOPA Protest

Upon visiting Wikipedia’s English site, you will notice a black banner on top of the page informing visitors that “the English Wikipedia will be blacked out globally to protest SOPA and PIPA.” Here’s part of Wikimedia Foundation’s Executive Director Sue Gardner about the said protest:

To: English Wikipedia Readers and Community
From: Sue Gardner, Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director
Date: January 16, 2012

Today, the Wikipedia community announced its decision to black out the English-language Wikipedia for 24 hours, worldwide, beginning at 05:00 UTC on Wednesday, January 18 (you can read the statement from the Wikimedia Foundation here). The blackout is a protest against proposed legislation in the United States—the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) in the U.S. Senate—that, if passed, would seriously damage the free and open Internet, including Wikipedia…

Tom Cruise plays again as Ethan Hunt, an agent of the Impossible Mission Force (IMF) who will lead his new team to go rogue to clear their organization’s name after being abandoned by the US government when a terrorist attack hit Russia.

Tom Cruise did the stunts himself that includes climbing the the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, which is 829.84 m (2723 ft) tall.

The Dark Knight Rises: The End of Batman?

Written By Marvs on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 | Be the first to comment!

The Dark Knight Rises is the third installment of Christopher Nolan-Christian Bale iteration of the Batman franchise, and is possibly the last. This could also be the end of Batman as the film will feature an older and physically challenged Caped Crusader fighting off Bane portrayed by Tom Hardy.

The Dark Knight Rises

The Nolan-Bale era began in 2005 with “Batman Begins” that earned $372 million worldwide. In 2008, “The Dark Knight” earned over $1 billion around the globe, in which much credit has been given to the Oscar-winning performance of Heath Ledger who passed away before the movie was shown.

The Dark Knight Rises

“The Dark Knight Rises” takes place eight years after “The Dark Knight” and is all about finishing Batman and Bruce Wayne’s story. Could this be the end of Batman?

Several of the islands are hollow, with enormous caves, other support floating villages of fishermen, who ply the shallow waters for 200 species of fish and 450 different kinds of mollusks.

Halong Bay

Iguazu Falls (Argentina, Brazil)

Iguazu Falls, in Iguazu River, are one of the world's largest waterfalls. They extend over 2,700 m (nearly 2 miles)  in a semi-circular shape.  Of the 275 falls that collectively make up Iguassu Falls, "Devil's Throat" is the tallest at 80 m in height.

Venezuela Bags Miss World 2011 Crown

Written By Marvs on Monday, November 7, 2011 | Be the first to comment!

Ivian Sarcos of Venezuela won the recently concluded Miss World 2011 beauty pageant held at Earls Court Exhibition Centre,London, United Kingdom while Miss Philippines, Gwendoline Ruais, was named the runner-up, and Amanda Perez of Puerto Rico came third in the contest that was broadcast live to an estimated audience of more than one billion viewers in 150 countries.

Miss World 2011

There are a total of 113 beauty queens from around the world who competed for the coveted crown of Miss World 2011, although originally over 120 delegates were expected to compete but problems with visa acquisitions prevented several candidates from participating.

The main duties of Miss World are to raise money for children health, Aids causes and other important foundations; and the pageant calls their platform efforts “Beauty With a Purpose.” Miss Ghana, Stephanie Adwoa Agyeiwaa Karikari, and Miss Indonesia, Astrid Ellena Indriana Yunadi, were the joint winners of the beauty with a purpose category.

I believe that the next Miss World should be a woman of responsibility and reason… I believe the woman should be committed to the organization and help people in need. Beauty with a heart…

Ivian Sarcos said before winning the Miss World 2011 title. She is a Diplomacy student who stands 1.80 m tall. She was raised by nuns  in a convent in Tachira who gave her the name Sora Ivian. Born July 26, 1989, in Guanare, Portuguesa, Venezuela, Ivian Lunasol Sarcos Colmenares became an orphan at the age of 8 when her parents passed away. Ivian was studying to be a nun but eventually gave up the idea and decided to start her career as a model and went on to become a Miss World winner. Nice!

With this win, Venezuela now holds the record of a country that has the most Miss World title totaling to 6 titles breaking up a tie with India which has 5 titles.

A little bit of history about the current Miss World Crown. It was actually a gift specially made by Queen Elizabeth of England for the Miss World Pageant and is the same crown that is used today.

Last year’s Miss World, Alexandria Mills of the United States, placed the glittering crown on her successor’s head amidst the cheering crowd inside the Earls Court Two auditorium. Ordos in Inner Mongolia, China, will be the host of the Miss World 2012 competition.

WARNING: This House Plant Could Kill!

Written By Marvs on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 | 3 comments so far

When I was a child, we have this potted plant inside our house that my grandmother used to take care of. It is a beautiful green plant that can grow as high as 6 feet. The leaves are large, ovate, and usually have irregular areas of lighter green, yellow, or off-white that follow the veining pattern. It is quite a special plant as she usually wipes the leaves of this plant with a clean piece of cloth to make them shiny and beautiful. It cannot be placed under direct sunlight that’s why it is sitting in one corner of the living room where it can get moderate to bright light. It should also be carefully watered as too much water can cause the plant’s leaf tips to brown; while too much fertilizer can cause curled, crispy leaf tips. It is just recently that I’ve known that this beautiful house plant could kill!

Dumb Cane

Dumb Cane (Dieffenbachia) is an attractive and popular house plant that features a single, thick trunk that unwinds into several trunks as it matures. I commonly see it inside friends’ and relatives’ houses displayed proudly planted in a beautiful pot.

It got its name from its poisonous sap that a person who chews it may experience an intense burning sensation in the mouth and then lose speech. In severe cases, swelling at the base of the tongue may block the air passage of the throat, with fatal results if not treated in time. It is most dangerous to children, and even pets, who may accidentally put the leaves in their mouth.

There are also some horrifying stories about Dumb Cane. It is reported to have been given to slaves as a form of punishment - the slave master would force the slave to put a piece of this plant into a slave’s mouth that would cause throat paralysis, and therefore result in permanent loss of voice. Also, in 1941, Heinrich Himmler, then head of the SS in Nazi Germany, considered using the dumb cane to sterilize war prisoners. The plan failed due the difficulty of shipping enough plants over from their natural home in Central America.

So BEWARE OF DUMB CANE! As much as possible, avoid using it as an indoor foliage to avoid terrible consequences of accidental consumption of this plant by you, your children, house members, pets or house guests.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Written By Marvs on Sunday, October 2, 2011 | 1 Comment so far

Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.

As well as providing a platform for breast cancer charities to raise awareness of their work and of the disease, BCAM is also a prime opportunity to remind women to be breast aware for earlier detection.

Breast cancer awareness is an effort to raise awareness of breast cancer and reduce the disease's stigma by educating people about its symptoms and treatment options. Supporters hope that greater knowledge will lead to earlier detection of breast cancer, which is associated with higher long-term survival rates, and that money raised for breast cancer will produce a reliable, permanent cure.

The pink ribbon is the most prominent symbol of breast cancer awareness, and in most countries,

21 Magnificent Photographs Of India

Written By Marvs on Saturday, September 24, 2011 | 4 comments so far

India is the seventh-largest country in the world and the second most populous, after China. It is a mystical land and is often called as the land of prayers. Four of the world's major religions—Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism—originated there.

It has been ruled by Hindus, Muslims as well as Christians from time to time. These rulers built incredible structures that served as their legacy. The most famous and most important building of them all is the Taj Mahal which was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahn in memory of his third wife Mumtaz Mahal.

Here’s a collection of 21 magnificent photographs of India which capture glimpses of daily life in this land of colors.
