Freddie Mercury: The Man Behind Queen

Search engine giant Google now features in its homepage a series of images depicting Freddie Mercury, the man behind Queen. Queen is one of the very few true great bands in the last 50 years.

Doodler Jennifer Hom was the brains behind the intricate doodle designed by a team of illustrators who spent three months putting the whole thing together.

The Google doodle commemorates the life of Mercury who would have been 65 this week. If you click on the play button in the middle of the doodle, you will be redirected to an animated video to the sound of “Don’t Stop Me Now”. It is the second longest doodle to date running at 98-seconds long.

So who was Freddie Mercury?

Born Farrokh Bulsara, September 5, 1946, in Stone Town, Zanzibar, Mercury spent his childhood in Africa and India, before his family moved to England, was a British musician, singer and songwriter.  In 1970, he, Brian May, and Roger Taylor began making music under the name Queen.

In 2006, Time Asia named him as one of the most influential Asian heroes of the past 60 years, and he continues to be voted one of the greatest singers in the history of popular music. In 2005, a poll organized by Blender and MTV2 saw Mercury voted the greatest male singer of all time. In 2008, Rolling Stone editors ranked him number 18 on their list of the 100 greatest singers of all time. In 2009, a Classic Rock poll saw him voted the greatest rock singer of all time. Allmusic has characterized Mercury as "one of rock's greatest all-time entertainers", who possessed "one of the greatest voices in all of music".

Mercury died in November of 1991, roughly a day after informing his fans that he was diagnosed with AIDS.
